The sleek and contemporary design of Modular Skylights complements the historical architecture, creating a harmonious blend of old and new
FÆNGSLET, a former state prison in Denmark dating back to 1853, has undergone a remarkable transformation. The structure has been revitalized and turned into a unique venue housing a hotel, concert hall, museum, and spaces for events. The renovated West Hall showcases the seamless integration of modern architecture with historical preservation. A key element is the glass roof above the courtyard, where a VELUX Modular Skylight system is now bringing daylight and a sense of openness to the heart of the former prison.
Architecture: Bridging the past and present
The vision for the West Hall project was not to erase the prison's past, but instead to enhance it. Therefore, the architects, Cubo Arkitekter, sought a simple and spartan aesthetic, a challenge given the project's technical complexity. They masterfully converted the building's restrictive layout into a large, unified space suitable for events. Two existing floors were removed to create a "box" that connects the large prison courtyard with an adjacent open space. This new space, the West Hall, seamlessly merges the interior with the exterior.
At the core of the design was the desire to maintain the feeling of being outdoors within the covered courtyard. This was achieved by roofing the courtyard with VELUX Commercial skylights, flooding the space with daylight and creating a sense of openness that contrasts starkly with the prison's original design – with robust steel gates and old bricks.
The roof renovation: A gateway to daylight
VELUX Commercial’s modular skylight system was chosen to cover the courtyard, creating a dynamic and adaptable space. The glass roof not only provides ample daylight but also preserves the feeling of being outdoors, a crucial aspect of the design brief. With this installation, the West Hall project symbolizes openness, light, and ultimately, freedom.
The renovation presented unique challenges, particularly due to the existing structure. The ease of installation of the VELUX Modular Skylights proved valuable, minimizing disruption to the existing building fabric and ensuring a swift and efficient construction phase.
Beyond simply providing daylight, the skylights also incorporate essential functionalities: Integrated smoke ventilation modules ensure safety in case of fire, while roller blinds provide control over light and heat, enhancing the versatility of the space for various events and functions.
The transformation of FÆNGSLET's West Hall exemplifies the potential of renovating old buildings. By uniting architects, specifiers, builders, and daylight specialists, the project seamlessly blended historical preservation with contemporary functionality. The integration of VELUX Commercial Modular Skylights not only maximized daylight but also became a defining architectural feature. This project highlights the importance of collaboration in the building industry and serves as an inspiring example for future renovations.
