Four years after IRS Haegeman, a certified VELUX installer, installed VELUX Commercial Modular Skylights in a building in Ternat, near Brussels, an unexpected opportunity emerged for those skylights.
The building was sold and destined for demolition. But now, SYNTRA, the building owner, decided that these skylights were far too valuable to waste. They therefore decided to reuse them in one of their other buildings, this time in Aalst.
The Flemish training institution, SYNTRA, operates in multiple locations across Belgium. They regularly renovate their sites to enhance the learning environment and modernise its infrastructure.
For the Aalst campus, the organisation sought a high-quality skylight solution to replace the existing continuous rooflights. This renovation upgraded a heated dining and bar area that sees high occupancy during lunch breaks.
A second life for Modular Skylights
This building project shows how circularity can work in praxis. Being able to dismantle and reinstall the skylights with full performance shows the long-term value of choosing durable, modular glass solutions.
The result is a renewed building with skylights that once again provide generous daylight, natural ventilation, and improved thermal comfort for students, while avoiding the environmental and financial costs of purchasing new skylights. More than a refurbishment, this project proves the true circularity potential of the Modular Skylight system.
