In short

X-Dome Rooflights are provided as single units, which can be installed individually or in groups to fill an interior with natural light and create an attractive design feature. Square and rectangular units with domes are popular options, but a variety of other shapes and sizes are available. Choose from a range of glazing options to suit both practical and aesthetic requirements.

Our rooflights are easy to install. They can be fixed directly to the roof or an existing upstand for maximum weatherproofing and fast closure of the building envelope. Interchangeable kerbs simplify installation and ensure a good fit, and they are suitable for use with all standard roofing membrane systems.

X-Dome Rooflights are provided with a 10-year warranty, and experts can offer support throughout design, specification and installation.

Functions and sizes

Product details

X-Dome is suitable for use with all popular types of roofing membrane and can be used on flat roofs and roofs with pitches of up to 15˚.

We offer a suite of interchangeable and interlocking kerbs, with options including vertical, splayed and adaptor kerbs to suit any upstand or depth of insulation on the roof. They can be manufactured from extruded PVCu, thermally broken aluminium or aluminium for unheated areas.

This system eradicates the need to construct metal frames, or timber grounds on-site and the vertical riser sections can accommodate both flat board and tapered insulation, resulting in a completely bespoke kerb height.

Glazing options

Glazing options include single-, double- or triple-skin polycarbonate, as well as double-glazed glass as a low U-value alternative, and a hybrid combination of polycarbonate and glass. Solid metal lids can also be provided.

Performance

Our dome rooflights have been carefully designed and tested to ensure they meet or exceed the necessary performance standards:

  • Thermal efficiency — Dome rooflights which meet the requirements of Building Regulations Part L.
  • Non-fragile — Classified as non-fragile and achieve Class B rating to ACR [M] 001:2014.
  • Fire performance — Dome rooflights have been tested according to BS 476 Part 7 and achieved a Class 1 rating.
  • Air permeability — 3m³/hr/m² at 50 pascals
  • Reaction to fire — Classified ad TP(a) and achieves Class B- s2, d0
  • External fire performance — Achieves BROOF(t4)
  • Fragility — ACR[M]001 Class B

They are also TP(a) rated, meaning the material self-extinguishes within five seconds after a flame has been removed.

Security options

VELUX Commercial offers a range of security options to prevent unauthorised access, depending on the level of security required and product selected.

Security screws

Thread assemblies into which the security screws locate are inaccessible.

Intruder grid

Intruder grid systems can be added to all dome rooflights. They are positioned between the glazing and the roof opening and consist of a 3mm diameter, solid steel fully welded mesh in a 75mm grid. This system will resist entry, even if the rooflight has been damaged or removed.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main application areas for dome rooflights?

Our domes are suitable for industrial, public, and commercial buildings. They can be used in both new buildings and renovation projects. We have completed several projects including industrial facilities, sports halls, auto centres/showroom, exhibition centre, school, and railway station.

Key application areas include:

Industrial applications: Manufacturing facilities, warehouses, production halls, and logistics centres benefit from the excellent natural lighting and SHEV provided by dome rooflights.

Commercial buildings: Retail spaces, shopping centres, office buildings, and showrooms use advanced dome rooflights to create bright and safe, welcoming environments that enhance customer experience and employee productivity.

Public buildings: Schools, hospitals, sports facilities, and community centres utilize specific dome rooflights for architectural purposes, safety features, and for providing consistent natural lighting throughout the day.

Specialized applications: Buildings near airports or in noise-sensitive areas benefit from enhanced units which provide heightened sound insulation (up to 36dB) while maintaining excellent light transmission.

Dome rooflights also excel in applications requiring fire safety compliance such as in fire escape routes and preventing fire advancement according to different standards, with smoke and heat extraction capabilities meeting EN 12101-2 standards.

What additional functions, besides providing daylight, do dome rooflights offer?

Additional functions include indoor comfort by heat protection, sun screening and ventilation for daily natural air exchange and smoke and heat extraction (SHEV) certified to EN 12101-2 standards.

What materials are used for dome rooflights?

Domes are made of polycarbonate (PC), and are available in various glazing options, e.g. opal, clear, diffused or bronze allowing light transmittance and solar gain requirements to vary in line with project requirements.  In our hybrid products these domes are combined with PC multiwall sheets, laminated safety glass or double-glazing units.

What upstand materials are available, and how do they impact performance?

We offer a comprehensive range of upstand materials designed to meet different performance requirements and applications.

Materials with different strengths and thermal and fire-related properties are applied. Hybrid material combinations with sophisticated flange design prevent thermal bridges and improve thermal performance.

Higher upstands allow for better integration in the building process and roof construction, by mounting on beams or roof sheets. Thicker roof insulation and better SHEV performance is supported.

Upstand shapes are according to architectural or technical wishes, with our splayed and vertical upstands, various shapes are available in square, rectangular or circular.

Additional features like mechanical roofing material fixation and watering rims improve installation speed and long-term watertightness.

Next to our standard fitting solutions, security frames can be adopted for added security in higher risk environments.

What glazing options are available, and how do they affect light and insulation?

Standard options:

  • 2-skin: for low heated or inhabitant buildings with basic energy performance.
  • 3-skin: Heated industrial, public & light commercial buildings with efficient energy performance

High-performance options:

  • 4-skin: heated, inhabited public, light commercial with high energy performance needs

How energy-efficient are your dome rooflights?

Our products comfortably meet and surpass legally required energy performance levels with many even anticipating future building regulations.

The premium composite Laylight dome achieves remarkable U-values through advanced heat protection glass technology combined with standard external dome providing an optimized thermal design. These exceptional performance levels translate to meaningful energy savings, reduced heating costs, and improved building certification ratings.

Do your dome rooflights help prevent condensation and mould?

Yes, our dome rooflights are designed to prevent condensation:

  • Thermal break technology eliminates cold bridges
  • High-performance glazing maintains interior surface temperatures above dew point
  • Ventilation options available for natural air circulation
  • Proper sealing systems prevent moisture ingress
  • Any internal condensation is drained to the exterior
  • Insulated upstand designs ensure continuous thermal envelope

Can you provide custom shapes and sizes?

We offer extensive customization options to meet diverse architectural requirements and design visions. Standard rectangular domes are available from compact 600 x 600 mm units up to substantial 1800 x 2400 mm installations, while round domes range from intimate 600 mm diameter up to impressive 1800 mm diameter options. Pyramid shapes are available in both square and rectangular configurations to create distinctive architectural features.

Special shapes include round flat designs for contemporary aesthetics and round hemisphere forms for traditional applications. Custom dimensions are available on request for special projects.
