Northlights are rows of modules installed up to 90° in order to provide large amounts of glare-free daylight, ideal for spaces that require soft light for optimum indoor conditions, e.g. at schools, offices, museums and galleries.
The Northlight solution does not require a sub-construction for installation and can be integrated into a sloped roof.
The modular Northlights allow fast and easy closure of the roof to reduce costs and make room for the interior works.
VELUX skylight specialists offer support throughout design, specification and installation, including design of the sub-construction needed for installation.
A dual pitched asymmetric Ridgelight with infill panels on one side can be used as a cost-competitive alternative for shed roofs covering large spaces such as warehouses and factories.

Yes, the Northlight 25-90° installation can be used in areas with strong winds . VELUX Modular Skylights have a resistance to wind load classification of Class C5 (the highest classification) for sizes up to 2400 mm height. The modules are tested at pressures up to 2000 Pa with frontal deflection less than L/300, and they pass safety tests at 3000 Pa.
Northlight’s characteristic upright design is primarily for installations directed towards the northern hemisphere, providing soft and reflected lighting. This orientation reduces direct solar gain while maximizing diffused daylight, creating even illumination without excessive heat. A lower pitch creates more daylight inside, while a steeper installation allows for more controlled, indirect light distribution.
The Northlight 25-90° design contributes to energy savings by providing diffused northern light without direct solar heat gain, reducing cooling needs. The modules have excellent thermal insulation with U-values ranging from 1.3-1.5 W/(m²K) for double-glazing and as low as 0.86-1.1 W/(m²K) for triple glazing. The design allows for natural light without excessive solar heat.
The acoustic performance of VELUX Modular Skylights ranges from 35 (-1;-5) to 38 (-1;-4) dB depending on the glazing variant. Triple glazing generally offers better acoustic performance than double glazing, with some variants reaching 42 (-2;-6) dB reduction.
When venting modules are used, they can be controlled with either VELUX io-homecontrol® wireless system or an Open System solution (±24V DC) that can connect to building management systems via protocols like KNX, BACnet, LON, and Modbus.
Our general maintenance guidelines apply, including regular cleaning 1-2 times per year and ensuring drainage paths are kept clear of debris. Additionally, we recommend annual function tests for actuators and roller blinds.
For non-north orientations, selecting appropriate glazing options (standard low-E, Sun1, or Sun2 coatings) with different solar factors (g-values) would be important to manage solar heat gain.
For Northlights, there are restrictions on installing smoke venting modules, as it is not possible to fit wind deflectors in a Northlight configuration. As a result, optimal performance of the smoke venting module cannot be achieved.
